Dan Carter
Dan describes himself as a "self employed opportunist/former construction engineer." He is racing a team owned by Frank Teasley from Jackson, Wyoming. His lead dog is Chicken, a 7-year-old female Alaskan Husky. Dan's mushing experiences include racing the IPSSDR, taking 5th place in 2003 and 8th place in 2000. He has also placed 4th in the UP200 in 2000 and raced the Attaboy300 in 2003. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, boating and travel.

Stephane DuPlessis
Stephane DuPlessis, a 12-year veteran musher, has a passion for winter and the outdoors. He enjoys the contact with his dogs that mushing affords him and hopes to race in the Iditarod and Yukon Quest in the future. Stephane is from St-Zeno, Quebec. His mushing experiences include the Can-Am 250 in 2001 where he placed 10th and again last year where he took second place. He has also raced the UP 200 and placed 2nd in the Katahdin Valley in 2001. His lead dogs this year are FeFille, a 7 year-old female; Blue, a 3 ½ year-old male; and Patch, a 3 ½ year-old male. Stephane's hobbies are fishing, hunting and trapping. He is the owner of his team from Duvet Kennels.

Robert Fredette
Dairy farming and sled dog racing; these two totally different activities seemingly have nothing in common, but this man finds a way to fit both into his truly unique lifestyle. Robert Fredette is a 38 year-old dairy farmer/sled dog racer from Ontario, Canada. His family includes his two kids, Marco and Jennifer. Besides sled dog racing and dairy farming, Robert also enjoys hunting and volunteering as a firefighter. He has been mushing for 10 years and has competed in many events. He held top places in many of these competitions, including fourth in our very own Can-Am Crown in 2000, 5th in 2001 and 8th in 2002. Robert admires his dogs because "They are happy every day, even after a hard day of training." His lead dogs are Alaskans, which include Alie (3.6 year-old male), Kogie (6 year-old male), Fille (6 year-old female), and Blackie (5 year-old female). Robert finds that when it comes to dog sledding, it is relaxing to be close to nature and he enjoys working as a team with his dogs. He admires the competition of dog sledding and watching the athletes perform. He would like someday to race in the Beargrease and especially the Yukon Quest.

Frank Teasley
Frank is a sled dog tour owner/operator and a race director from Jackson, Wyoming with an impressive racing record. He has raced the Iditarod 8 times taking 6th place in 1991. He has also raced the Beargrease taking 1st place in 2002. He took 3rd place in the UP200 and raced in the Attaboy300. Frank's lead dogs are Horse, a 7-year-old female Alaskan husky and Harper, a 5-year-old female Alaskan husky. His hobbies include fishing, hunting and traveling abroad.

Mitch Ingerson
Tongue-in-cheek, "road rash and cold feet" are two aspects of dog sledding that Mitch says he enjoys the most. He is also self-employed and is "happily married with dogs." Sounds like Mitch has been training hard for the Can-Am 250, a race he is determined to finish. A forty-two-year old from Jefferson, N.H, Mitch has three years experience in racing. He has participated in the Craftsbury 30, where he placed 8th, and the Sandwich 60, where he took 2nd place. He has placed first in the Freight Race. Mitch's lead dog is a 3½ year-old male Alaskan Husky, Okee. The fact that his dogs are great athletes is one of the things he likes most about them.

Mike Johnson
Mike Johnson, 35, is a building contractor from LeRoy, MI with 6 years of mushing experience. Mike has raced in the Mackinaw Wilderness, St. Ignace, Tanguanmenon, the Midnight Run, the Can-Am 60 and the Cam-Am 250. His lead dogs, all Alaskan Huskies, are Sweetie (6 ½ year-old female), Blitzen (6 year-old female), Sonnet (2 ½ year-old female), and Reno (2 ½ year-old male). Mike enjoys spending time outdoors and relaxing with his dogs. He enjoys hunting and his motorcycle, pretty much anything that happens outside, and hopes in the future to continue raising and racing Alaskan Huskies. Mike would like to enter and experience more distance races. He wants to finish every day with happy dogs. He likes their unconditional love and acceptance, their enthusiasm and willingness to learn as well as their ability to teach, "if you listen." Mike finds that dog sledding gives him the time to spend with his family, all working together in his and his sister's kennel, and racing gives him the opportunity to meet people from all over the country.

John Kaleta
John and Denise,his wife of 16 years, live in Eagle Lake, Maine. They have two children, Ian 12, and Emily 7, a future winner of the Can-Am 250. John has been a life sciences teacher in Fort Kent for 16 years. He has been mushing for 15 years and competed in the first Can-Am 250 in 1993. He has competed in all three of the Can-Am races (30, 60, 250) at various times throughout the history of these races. For his future goal John plans to take the next year off to set up his Full Moon Sled Dog Adventures Co. John enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family. The peace of running the trail with his dogs is where he feels most at home. His lead dogs - all Alaskans - are Casper (7 year-old male), Elvis (3-year-old male), Chip (4-year-old male), and Astro (6-year-old male). John likes his dogs' resiliency and their desire to please him and themselves. He finds that each has a uniquely special talent and responsibility to the team. As for hobbies, he writes that he loves everything to do with the outdoors, including cross-country running.

Stephane Massicotte
Listing boating, fishing and hunting as some of his hobbies, this twenty-year old from St-Prosper, Quebec, says he loves working outdoors and seeing the countryside in the winter, especially with his dogs. He has participated twice in the Can-Am 60 and ran in the Katahdin Valley 100. He says this year he and his dogs are ready for the Can-Am 250. His goals are to take first place in the Can-Am 250 and someday race in the Yukon Quest. His lead dogs, Alaskan Huskies, are Anouck (five-year-old female), TeTou (eight-year-old male), Brandy (three-year-old female) and Polar (3 ½ year-old male). Stephane enjoys the competition and adventure of dog-sled racing. He finds that his dogs enjoy mushing as much as he does, have a lot of spirit and their performance is always 100%.

Stan Morgan
Stan is a retired Ford Motor Co. employee from St. Michel des Saints, Quebec. He has been mushing for more then twenty years and has listed the Can-Am, Marmora, Bancroft, Sandwich Notch, and Tug Hill among some of his many races over the years. He hopes to live life to the fullest and enjoys the peace and solitude of mushing and the close companionship of his dogs. Stan's lead dogs for this years race are all Alaskan Huskies. Aurora (6 year-old female), Ruby (7 year-old male), Clyde (9 year-old male), and Apache (5 year-old male). Larry Murphy
Larry is a fifty-one-year old musher from Fort Kent, Maine. He is an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at the elementary school. Larry is married with three children and two grandchildren. He has 4 years mushing experience and has raced the Can-Am 60 in 2000 and 2001 and the 250 in 2002. . He has also raced the Katahdin 100 and the Blanchard. Larry's goal is to finish in the top ten in this year's Can-Am 250. He enjoys the entire experience of dog sledding with its challenges of training and conditioning his dogs and the bond and respect that develops between him and them. Larry's lead dogs are Alaskans; Silma (8 female), Jenny (6 female) Spanky (5 male) and Peggy (6 female). Their loyalty and enthusiasm are what Larry likes most about his dogs. His hobbies are camping, fishing, and hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Scott Smith
Scott, who is 32, says his family life is comprised of his dogs and Jill Howsam. His is a builder and manages Continental Divide Dogsled Adventures, Inc. in Debois, Wyoming. Scott has raced in the Grand Portage, the Ashton Dog Derby, Can-Am 250, Atta Boy 300, and the International Pedigree Stage Stop. His goals are to run fast, happy and healthy dogs as long as possible. He plans to race in the Seeley Lake 200, Race to the Sky and the Percy DeWolfe this year. The best aspects of his dogs are the loyalty they have to each other and him, and their desire to run to the finish. Also he says they are "super happy dogs!" They get along very well and work well together. To Scott, the best part of dog sledding is watching his dogs and himself mature both mentally and physically while accomplishing the goals they set. His lead dogs, all Alaskan Huskies, are Burgy (3 ½ year-old male), Peanut (3 ½ year-old male), Osprey and Raven (4 year-old females) and Zin and Murl (3 ½ year-old females). Scott's other interests involve traveling, fishing, hunting, and Jill Howsam.

Andy Chakoumakos
Andy Chakoumakos, 38, has been-running dogs since 1990. Andy and Liz Como, his wife and "winner" of the red lantern in the 2002 Can Am 250, run a dogsled guiding business, Winter Journeys, in Lovell, Maine. Andy is also an instructor with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in Maine. He works courses in all seasons, including dog sledding, canoeing and rock climbing. He has mushed in the Haute Gorge in Quebec and throughout the wilds of Maine and New Hampshire, with a little Minnesota for some variety. This year will be his second running of the 250. He not only hopes to finish but to better Liz's time from last year. A little friendly marital competition on alternating years. When Andy is not busy running dogs he also enjoys photography and has recently begun photographing some of the extreme adventure races that take place in the northeast. Andy plans to run veteran race leaders Aleut (9), Yeti (5), Freeze (5), and the other rising stars from the Winter Journeys kennel.

Kirk Aili
Kirk Aili, from Ray,Minnesota, skipped last year's 250 to assist his younger brother, Keith, in the Iditarod. This 34-year-old carpenter and bear hunting guide has considerable experience and success in recent races. In 2000 he finished first in the 130 Empire and second in the Grand Portage. In 2001 he won the Grand Portage. Last year he finished second in the Empire 130. Kirk hopes to continue his success at this year's Can-Am 250.

Steve Kennedy
Steven Kennedy has been mushing for over 20 years. One of the benefits of dog sledding is the opportunity to spend time with his buddies. He is an experienced distance racer having completed the 2000 and 2002 Can-Am 250. His lead dogs are Sugar, an 8-year-old female Alaskan; Patty Cake, a 3-year-old female Alaskan; Tom, a 3-year-old male Alaskan and Maverick, an 8-year-old Alaskan. Steven is a music teacher who enjoys shooting as a hobby. He and his wife, Kathleen, live in nearby Wallagrass.

Bruce Langmaid
Bruce Langmaid is a 45-year-old kennel operator who has 20 years mushing experience. He raced in last year's 250 and returns this year to compete again. In addition to the solitude of the outdoors and the benefit of working with dogs to build teamwork, Bruce believes that dog sledding builds character not only in himself, but in his dogs as well. His lead dogs are Shanna, a 4-year-old female Alaskan; Amazon, a 5-year-old female Alaskan; Rodeau, a 2-year-old male Alaskan; and Morel, a 5-year-old male Alaskan.

Angelo Suriano
Angelo, from Winthrop, N.Y., says he was spinal cord injured in 1986 and was told he would never walk again. Well, Angelo is doing a bit more than walking now. He is a "Rookie preparing to race in the Sandwich Notch 60…" and has entered the Can-Am 250. He lists his hobbies as hunting, fishing, camping, working on his 40-acre farm, planting trees and ginseng. A dog trainer, Angelo hopes to race in the Iditarod in 2005. His lead dog is a Siberian Mix named Ivory, a 5-five-year-old female. The one thing Angelo enjoys most about dog sledding is his dogs. He most admires their loyalty.

Paul Huska
"Just being out running with the dogs, the power of larger teams, and their enthusiasm" are some of the more pleasurable characteristics of dog sledding according to Paul. This 45-year-old carpenter from East Nassau, NY has been married for 21 years to his wife, Rita, and has three daughters. Paul's mushing experience includes racing the Sandwich, Craftsbury, Endless Mt., the Blanchard and previous Can-Am competitions. His lead dogs, all Siberians, are Tasha, a 2-year-old female; Kai, a 2-year-old male; Carrot, a 9-year-old female, and King, a 4-year-old male. Paul finds his dog's quiet demeanor and excellent work ethic a pleasure to watch. He hopes to continue running dogs for the foreseeable future.

Tenley Meara
Tenley knows she has been successful when she finishes a race or training run and her dogs have happy tails. Tenley lives in Topsham, ME, with her husband, John. She is a business process manager at Bowdoin College. She has 10 years mushing and racing experience with top placements in the 30 and 60-mile races at Blanchard, CAC30, Craftsbury, Phillips Brook and Sandwich Notch. For future goals she wants to finish the 250 this year and says, "after that, who knows?" Her lead dogs, Alaskan Huskies, are Aspen, a 3-year-old male; Cedar, a 3-year-old male; Star, a 3-year-old female and Leia, a 3-year-old female. For hobbies, Tenley operates the As the Crow Flies Guide Service so she can share her love of mushing and hunting with others. She enjoys trail riding and team penning and hunter paces with her horse. For the rest of the time, she relishes the sense of peace and joy she feels when riding the runners with her team.

John Osmond
John is a 40-year-old carpenter and manufacturer of sled dog equipment from Shirley Mills, Maine. He has a great deal of experience mushing and dog sled racing. He took 1st place in the 95 Labrador 100 and has raced the Can-Am 250 since 1997, missing only the 2002 race. He entered the Marmora 150 in 1996 and 1997 and has been in many other 60 and 30-mile races. John's future goals are clear, to "keep running sled dogs." His lead dogs are all male Alaskan Huskies. They are, 6-year-old Drill, 5-year-old Colt, 5-year-old Kirby and 3-year-old Agassi. He loves being alone in the wild of winter with his dogs and enjoys their different personalities and good work ethics.

Andy Nissley
Twenty-year-old Andy Nissley is from Sherman Mills, Maine. He and his father are the co-owners of the team Andy is racing this year. The lead dogs are all Alaskan Huskies. They are; Ghost, a 7-year-old male; Dodge, a 6-year-old male; Skunk, a 2-year-old male; and Shy Ann, a 2-year-old female. Andy has been racing in the Can-Am for six years and took 6th place in the 1999 Can-Am 30. His goal this year is to win the 250. When asked what he enjoyed most about dog sledding, Andy's answer was succinct, "The dogs." Raising and training pups is one of the various pleasures he finds in dog sledding. His hobbies are playing the banjo and hunting.

Mike Ellis
Mike Ellis, a 32-year-old land surveyor from Rumney, NH, is married to "wonderful" Sue. He has been mushing over the last nine winters and has been in the Can-Am 30 and 60. He has competed in 60-mile races in Sandwich, NH, Marmora, Ont. and Craftsbury, VT. He has also been in many 30-mile races. He lists the team owners as Michael and Susan Ellis. Lead dogs, all Siberian Huskies, are Wyatt, an 8-year-old male; Squiggle, a 4-year-old female; Zirkle, a 2-year-old female; and Kobuk, a 4-year-old male. When asked what he like most about his dogs, Mike wrote, "I got started with Siberian Huskies and fell in love with the breed. Our dogs are amazing in many ways and are truly part of our family". As their kennel has grown, Mike and Sue find that mushing has become their only hobby. Mike's future goal is to finish the 250 (his first) with strong healthy dogs.

Tom Roig
This 53-year-old grandpa from Shreve, Ohio has been mushing since 1995. His races include the Tanquamenon Country Sled dog race, the UP 200 and Midnight Run, and the Seney 200 and 300 Training Runs, all in Michigan. Tom is the owner and operator of T&B Landscapes and Valley Road Outfitters. When not working or mushing he enjoys backpacking, canoeing, hunting, and trapping. His lead dogs are Alaskan Huskies; Jim,a male; Neko, a female; Emily, a female; and Blackie, a male. The solitude and quiet of running a sled dog team thru a wooded trail is one of the great pleasures that he derives from his mushing experience.

Blake is an manufacturing engineer from Cambridge, MN. His impressive record includes the Iditarod, Knik 200, Klondike 300, Grand Portage Passage. Among his goals for the future he includes the Yukon Quest in 2004. Jim Oehlschlaeger
Jim is an experienced musher having competed in the Iditarod in 1992 and 93 as well as last year. In addition he raced in the Can-Am in 99 and the Quest in 01. He is a 56-year-old electrical contractor from Newberry, Michigan. His lead dogs are Banchee, a 3-year-old female Alaskan and Teddie, a 4-year-old female Alaskan. Training sled dogs is Jim's main hobby and running dogs is his chief pleasure.

Steve Crone
Steve, a 49-year-old Wilderness Lodge Owner/Guide from Mason Township, ME is the proud father of a kennel of 50 beautiful canine athletes and 5 sweet housedogs. He has five full years of mushing experience preempted by 4 years skijoring and took sixth place in the Can-Am 250 in 2000 and 2002. He has also run many other smaller races. His future goal is "just to keep on riding the runners with happy athletic dogs and maybe someday (if the body holds up) to run a race in the Yukon/Alaska area." He also writes, "their love and dedication and ability to run in the manner they do constantly humbles me." Steve's lead dogs are Maverick, 7, Cochi, 4, and Kenzie, 5, rounded out with Puma, Hawk, Arrow, Blanche, Night Bear, Maze, Alice and Husky… all Alaskans.

Boyd Wilson
Boyd is a 26-year-old marketing associate who has been mushing for 7 years. He has raced the Eldorado Gold Cup taking 1st place, 1st in the Katahdin 100, 1st in the Bancroft 60, and 1st in the Can-Am 60. He has also raced the St. Ignace. Boyd's lead dogs are all Alaskan Huskies. They are Aria, a 4-year-old female; Al, a 4-year-old male; Thumper a 2½-year-old male; and Blue, a 4-year-old male. Their determination and drive are some of the qualities he admires most in his dogs. He hopes to place in the top five in this years' Can-Am 250. He lives with wife, Kelly, and his two children, Candice and Riley, in Marmora, Ontario. Boyd likes the peacefulness of dog sledding and also enjoys hunting and fishing.

Matt Weik
Matt writes that he and his family love to come to Maine where he finds the Can-Am races very professional and constantly improving. This busy musher has a landscape business in Outing, MN. He has been married 7 years to Sara and they have a son, 6-year-old Josey. When asked about his hobbies he wrote, "Dogs, dogs and more dogs! I love to race, fish and spend time with Sara and Josey." Qualities he appreciates most in his dogs are their friendliness, their drive and their eagerness to please. When it comes to dog sledding, Matt values the solitude and the silence. This is his 3rd Can-Am 250 taking 4th place last year. His future goal is to race in the Iditarod next year.

Gratien Gendron

Frank Holmberg
Frank is a musher from Newberry, Michigan. He has wide experience in dog sled racing having participated in 14 races over five years. Among some of the races in which he has take part are the Midnight Run, UP200, John BearGrease MidDistance, Gold Quest, St Ignace Sleddog Enduro. He has taken 7-1st places, 3-2nd places, 1-3rd place and 2-4th places. His lead dogs, all Michigan/Alaskan Huskies owned by Bob and Jan Shaw, are Helga, a 6 1/2 -year-old female, Windows, a 3 1/2 -year-old female, Pepsi, a 4 ½-year-old male and Ranger, a 3 ½-year-old male. Frank enjoys training and conditioning his dogs and is rewarded by their toughness and enthusiasm. He hopes that he may become a resident of Caribou, ME in the spring.

Ashley Simpson
Ashley, from Shirley, ME hopes to someday enter the Can-Am 250 and the Yukon Quest. She has made a good start taking 1st place in the 2003 Sherman 30/30 and 2nd place in the 2003 Craftsbury 60. Ashley has also placed 9th in the Can-Am 60 in 2002 and 5th in the Blanchard 30. She is a handler for Mountain Ridge and writes that she enjoys the challenge of "pushing your body and mind to the limit." Her lead dogs this year are Brookie, a 4-year-old female Alaskan husky and Lilly, a 3-year-old female Alaskan husky. Ashley commented that her dogs hate losing.

Robert O'Hearn
Bob O'Hearn is an automotive technician from Sandown, New Hampshire. He and his wife Rhonda established Mishawum Siberians in 1999. This will be the third time racing the Can-Am with a team of their own. At this writing, all 12 of the racing core could make the team. But with a month to go, a final decision as to which 8 will run will not be made until the day of the race. Steel, Nikki and Allagash have really improved and may be, barring any injuries, the team's main leaders. Originally, they thought about running in the 30 mile class again, but with the snow and training that we've been blessed with here in the East, now is the time to test the team in a longer competition… and what better place to do so than in Fort Kent!

Thomas Lavin
Thomas Lavin writes that his mushing experience in 2002 includes the Can-Am 60 and the Sandwich Notch 60, a race he did not finish. He indicates his goal this year at the 2003 Can-Am is "to finish a 60-mile race before dark!" This 60-year-old lawyer from West Brume, Quebec has been mushing for over 20 years. His lead dogs are Malamute/Husky crosses: Zoro, a 4-year-old male; Catish, a 4-year-old female ; Galou, a 2-year-old male; and Tosca, a 6-year-old female.

Duane Ramsay
While Duane Ramsay's resume indicates that he is retired, he certainly does not spend much time in his rocking chair. His dogs and racing take up all of his time in the fall and winter and the rest of the year is spent working in a garden center and doing some gardening at home. This 65 year old "retiree" enters 6-7 races a year and usually finishes somewhere in the middle third of the teams. His lead dogs are Alaskan Huskies: Lester, a 6-year-old male, Tessa, a 5-year-old female. Two optional 2-year-old dogs he may race are Dugen and Amy. Duane enjoys being with his dogs and relishes their love of life.

Becky Johnson-Himes
Becky Johnson-Himes is competing in her third Can-Am having raced in the 30 in 2001 and the 60 last year. This 32-year-old RN from Luther, Michigan has 9 years mushing experience. Her lead dogs are Lilly, a 2-year-old female Alaskan and Screamer, a 4-year old male Alaskan. Taking care of her dogs is a family affair. Her husband Phil, his parents, Barb and Sig, and brother Mike make sure that her dogs are happy, healthy, and ready to run. Her goal is to raise happy dogs with a good work ethic and to finish races with healthy dogs. She derives great pleasure observing the dogs mature throughout the season and "getting more love in one day than most people receive in a lifetime." Becky says, "what's not to like," when asked what she liked most about her dogs. "They all have different personalities and favorite spots to be rubbed."

Mary Wolf
Mary Wolf is an ambitious young musher who wants to compete in next year's 250 and the Iditarod in 2005. She lives in the northern woods of St Francis with her mother and brother Mike, a fellow musher. She raced and finished the Can-Am 30 in 2001 and 2002. Her lead dogs, owned by Pat Wolf, are female Alaskan Huskies: Princess, an 8-year-old; Ginger, a 7-year-old; Sardine, a 10-year-old; and Yukon, a 3-year-old. In addition to racing dogs she enjoys cross country running, hockey and bird watching.

Dennis Cyr
Dennis, a 44-year-old self-employed carpenter from Fort Kent, ME., is employed by several area towns as a code enforcement officer. He is married and has three children. Dennis has three years musher experience and ran the Can-Am 60 in 2002, His "first race ever" and finished 15th. Dennis operates the Snow-Runner Kennels and offers sled dog rides. He says for information call 834-3862. Dennis finds his dogs are intelligent, dedicated and enthusiastic. Al Tarr
While he takes great pleasure in the joy and excitement his dogs display when they run down the trail, Al also likes traveling about meeting new people, making new friends, seeing new country and renewing old friendships. Al has 12 years of mushing experience. Living in Pennsylvania, this 55-year-old self-employed excavating contractor has been in the PA Cross Country, Endless Mt., Marmora, Kearney, Sandwich Notch 60, Call of the Wild Classic, the Can-Am 60 and the St.Ignace. His lead dogs are Phoebe, a 9-year-old Siberian husky and Mariah, a 19-month-old Siberian husky. Future goals are to enter some longer distance races like the Can-Am 250 and to finish all the races he starts. Some of Al's hobbies are hunting and fishing.

Gaetan Martin
Gaetan Martin, a retired teacher from St. Basile, NB, is a returning veteran to the Can-Am races. With ten years of mushing experience under his belt, this is his 6th year in the Can-Am races. All huskies, Gaetan's lead dogs are Heidi (4 female), Pico (4 male) and Pichou (5 female). He says his dogs are "always there," working like a well-oiled machine. Gaetan feels dog sledding is the best activity to keep in contact with nature and animals. His future goal is to enter in the Can-Am 250 in 2004. He also enjoys snowmobiling, cycling and carpentry.

Marcel Drouin
Marcel is a stair manufacturer from Embrun, Ontario. His racing history includes the Grand portage 2001, placing 10th, The Marmora from 1997 to 2001, the Bancroft from 1998 to 2002 (skipping 2000) and the Can-Am from 1998 to 2002. His lead dogs this year are Alaskan Huskies. They are, Balto, a 6-year-old male, Carlo, a 4 ½-year-old male, Vaughn, a 4 ½-year-old male and Cif, a 4 ½-year-old female. Asked which aspects of dog sledding that he enjoys the most, Marcel wrote, "Being on a nice quiet trail in the bush surrounded by nature and the company of my wonderful athletes. The bond created between the dogs and myself is really wonderful." Some of the characteristics of his dogs that he likes the most are their funny characters, their great attitude towards work and most of all, their company. Terry, a retired US Army command Sergeant Major from Browning, Maine, is married to his handler, Margie, has 3 grown children and 3 granddaughters. Terry writes that they are enjoying "the good life in Piscataquis Country, Maine. He has been mushing for about 17 years and has more then 10 Sandwich Notch 60 miles races under his belt. He has also raced the Katahdin 100 and this is his sixth Can-Am. His lead dogs are Jo Mary, a 3-year-old female Siberian Husky and Dream Seeker, a 3-year-old male Siberian Husky. Terry likes working with Siberian Huskies because he finds them very willing to trust him. While out on the trails with his dogs he gets a great deal of pleasure sighting deer, moose, eagles, owls and all the creatures of the beautiful Maine woods.

Christine writes that her hobbies are mountain biking and "dreaming about Alaska". This biochemist from Canaan, NH, has logged eight years of dogsled racing. She says she started with sprints and is now doing more distance racing. Among her accomplishments, she placed second in 2002 in Craftbury 30, second place in the Phillips Brook 30 and won the sportsmanship award in the Laconia Open Class Sprint Race. Christine writes that family life consists of lots of friends and her 24 dogs. Her future goals are to go FASTER and have even more FUN. She loves her happy dogs and they love her back by working hard for her and making her proud. Though he has 4½ years of mushing experience under his belt, this will be Bear's first race. This sixteen-year-old from Stow, Maine, is a student and rock climber. He took the outward bound course this past summer and hopes to graduate from college in the future. He says his dogs "always keep me on my toes" and enjoys watching them learn. Barry Dana
As he puts it, this "father of 5 and husband of 1" is the Tribal Chief of the Penobscot Nation. He has finished the Can-Am 250 both by ski-joring and on the runners of a sled but would like to train in the snow for more than a month. Barry loves everything about dog sledding including the dogs, people, events, training runs at night and watching the dogs eat up the trail even after running 80 miles. His lead dogs are Abol, a 4-year-old male Alaskan and Magog, a 5-year-old male Alaskan. His dogs' willingness and desire to RUN is one of qualities that he admires most. He leaves no doubt that outside of mushing his favorite activity is canoeing.

Caroline Blair-Smith
Caroline writes that she and her husband, Andy, have been raising dogs for the past 4 years, an experience that elevates her from "abject novice" to "green". Last year's Can-Am 30 was her first racing effort, resulting in a 6th place that was "as thrilling as it was miraculous". She enjoys working with dogs that have minds of their own. Her Alaskan Husky lead dogs are Schoodie, a 3-year-old female; Taiga, a 4-year-old female; and Panda, a 2-year-old male. She likes how her dogs don't struggle with nature or strive for mere survival but accept the challenge of winter in a spirit of celebration. Mike, a high school math teacher and trail groomer for Maine Winter Sports Center is a Fort Kent native. This is his first race and his third year of mushing. His lead dogs, owned by Kim Paradis, are Fargo, a 13-year-old female Alaskan Husky; Eagle, a 5-year-old male Alaskan Husky; Tele Mark, a 2-year-old half Alaskan half Siberian, and Shannon, a 6-year-old female Alaskan Husky. When it comes to dog sledding he finds the wild rides through the woods exhilarating and learning about wild instinct from his dogs fascinating. This is Bruce's second year of mushing and first year racing. This forty-year-old from Vermont loves being out on the trail with a team of his best friends. Bruce is an examiner analyst for the state of Vermont. Thirty-one-year old Carl Deblois loves dog sledding because the sport keeps him in good shape through the winter months. His goals are to build a top-notch team year after year… and he's doing a good job of it. He finished in second place from 1999 to 2001 and third in 2002 in the Can-Am 30. A building contractor, Carl has two children Kathy and Gabrielle. He enjoys watching his dogs run and admires how hard they work. Marco is a 25-year-old dog business owner from St-Zeon, Quebec. He has been mushing 11 years and started racing in 1993, entering many races in Quebec. He has taken second place in Lac St. Jean, 3rd place in St-Emile and took 14th place in the open North American championship. Marco says he is completely devoted to his dogs, which leaves him little time for other hobbies. He takes great pleasure in training and racing his dogs, which he considers his family. His lead dogs for this race are Rust, a 5-year-old male Alaskan husky and Nip, a 3½-year-old Alaskan mix with 1/8th hound. Marco hopes to enter the Open North American Championship in 2004.

Ben writes that his dogs never cease to amaze him. He finds his dogs are faster this year then they ever were. He is presently working on putting together a competitive team for stage racing. Ben has been dogsledding since he was 10-years-old and has run the Can-Am 250 three times along with a bunch of other races. Denise Thomas
Denise, a K-6 one-room schoolteacher from Blanchard, Maine, is racing a team owned by Russell Mountain Racing. Her lead dogs are Dalton, a 10-year-old male Alaskan husky, Kate, a 4-year-old female Alaskan Husky and Greta, a 6-year-old female Alaskan husky. Denise has been practicing sprints for three years in preparation for this, her first 30-mile race. She is married to Ben Thomas, who is also racing the Can-Am 30 this year, and has a daughter, named Marie. Denise finds her dogs have wonderful personalities and enjoys making connections with them, learning about their strengths and weaknesses and enjoys the challenge of putting together a well running team. She intends to continue learning about dog sledding and to improve her own and her dogs abilities.

Fred Delano
Writing that his ultra light aircraft hasn't had much use since it got cool enough to run dogs, this 47-year-old aircraft mechanic from Troy, Maine is married to Heidi and has two daughters. He is new to the sport, this being his first year, having competed in one prior race, the six-dog 30 mile at Sherman Mills in January of 2003, which he won. What Fred lacks in experience he makes up in enthusiasm and desire to improve. When is comes to learning the sport he writes that he has met some wonderful teachers both canine and human. He says his dogs have shown great enthusiasm and patience as they trained together and his human teachers have taken much time to answer questions and encourage him. Fred's lead dogs are Lightning, a 7-year-old male Alaskan husky and Sadie, a 7-year-old female Alaskan husky. Fred and his family are involved in showing Quarter horses in the summertime and now enjoy running dogs in the winter.

This 36-year-old civil engineer from Natural Bridge, NY has been married for 8 years to Sara and has have two children. Alan's lead dogs, all huskies, are Zeana, a 3-year-old female, Camby, a 3-year-old male and Jazzi, a 1 ½-year-old female. Alan comments on how he admires his dog's great desire to work at running and to please. He finds dog sledding very relaxing, enjoying the solitude and exploring the countryside.

A general practitioner and part time wilderness freak from St-Francois, New Brunswick, Yves Carrier's family includes his wife Juliette and two children, Eric and Jean Francois. His Alaskan lead dogs are Gaguk, an 8-year-old male and Gringo, an 8-year-old male, both good natured and loyal friends. Ives likes the fact that dogsledding is an environmentally friendly winter sport that keeps him in shape. He has been mushing dogs since 1976 and has competed in every Can-Am 30 mile race as well as all of the races held in Baker Lake. He hopes to keep on mushing to a ripe old age.

Guy Landry
When asked what he likes most about dog sledding, Guy responded, "It's too much for words. It's time travel to a different era with a spirituality akin to Zen, beyond conception for the uninitiated." He advises, "Go out and experiment, seek for it." Racing a team owned by Ives Carrier, his lead dogs are Brun, a 5-year-old male Alaskan and Shotgun, a 2-year-old male Alaskan. This 37-year-old laborer from St-Francois, NB has been mushing for 7 years. He has raced in four previous Can-Am 30s and says that his best finish was when he beat Ives Carrier. When asked about his family life Guy wrote, "Yes, I have one, thank you," and when questioned about other hobbies he responded, "I have no time for hobbies, I work for a living." He hopes to "keep mushing of course," when queried about his future goals and when asked what he liked most about his dogs, replied, "They are not cats."

Jeremie has raced in the Craftsbury, Sandwich Notch and Phillips Brook. This 28-year-old carpenter from Ripton, Vermont is married, has a son, Finn, and a new baby on the way. Jerry is an apartment maintenance person/musher from North Creek, NY. He has been racing for the past six years placing 6th at St. LaZare and 5th at St. Eugene. About the most enjoyable aspect of dog sledding he writes, "Satisfaction of raising a puppy, training and conditioning him into a dog that is capable of competing in a competitive dog team. Twenty-four-year-old Amanda is currently a biology teacher at Fort Kent High School. She is also a complete "rookie" at mushing. This is her first year of enjoying the thrill and freedom of being out with the dogs and says, "freezing is just a bonus." Jill, a twenty-five year old from Dubois, WY, says that the things she enjoys most about dog sledding are the camaraderie of the dogs, the athleticism of the sport and the views you catch from a sled -particularly at sundown. Her immediate future goal is to "finish this race." Jill is impressed by the tenacity of her dogs and how, for them, only the present exists. She plans to race in the Seeley Lake 200 and the Ashton Dog Derby. For this race, she will be running Alaskan Husky lead dogs owned by Scott Smith. They are Fiddle (seven-year-old female), Nala (four-year-old female), Greta (three-year-old female), and two five-year-old females, Tina and Quina. Jill says her other primary interests include reading, travel and Scott Smith.

Paul Boudreau
Paul is a retired security officer and has been mushing for 30 years. He has raced in previous Can-Am 250's, and the Labrador among many long distance races, and placed among the top competitors over the years. His lead dog is Fanie, a 3-year-old female Alaskan. Paul finds his contact with his dogs and nature two of the pleasurable aspects of dog sledding he enjoys the most. The most admirable facets of his dogs are their honesty and desire to run. He hopes to someday win the Labrador 120.
