OFFICIAL RACE RULES

INTERNATIONAL SLED DOG RACE
FORT KENT, MAINE

MARCH 1, 2008

In addition to the following rules, the General Can-Am Crown Rules also apply to this race.

  1. Course and Checkpoint

    The race course covers approximately 60 miles in a scenic loop over varied terrain that includes forests, brooks, lakes, fields and populated areas. There will be a single checkpoint approximately half way. The checkpoint is located near Third Pelletier Lake in St. Francis, Maine, but may change prior to the day of the race.

  2. Conditions of Entry

    This race is limited to 30 teams. To ensure entry, please register early!

    Can-Am Crown will begin to accept applications on August 15, 2007.

    Registration deadline is at 1:00pm Friday, February 29, 2008.

    There is no qualifier race experience necessary to enter the CAC 60.

    Drivers must start the race with not fewer than 6 dogs and not more than 8 dogs.

    Each dog shall be clearly identified by legibly printed names (the dog's name and the name or initials of the driver) on or attached to the collar.

    Entry Applications

    The entry fee is $150. All fees and refunds are in U.S. funds only.

    Entries will not be confirmed until Can-Am Crown receives the entry fee
    and all properly executed documents as described in the General Rules.

    Bib numbers will be assigned by a daily random draw.

    For example, if 10 applications are received on August 15, then bib numbers 1 through 10 will be randomly drawn for those applicants on the next morning. If 6 are received the next day, then bib numbers 11 through 16 will be randomly drawn, etc.


    CAC 60 Refund Schedule

    Drivers withdrawing before January 1, 2008 will receive a $90 refund.

    Beginning January 1, refunds will be reduced by $1 per day.

    Drivers withdrawing after February 19 will receive a $40 refund only if there is an active waiting list.

    Refund date is to be defined as the date that Can-Am Crown receives notice of withdrawal.



    Pre-race Veterinary Examinations

    Unless other arrangements are made with the Chief Veterinarian, all teams will be examined sometime between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 29, 2008. The examinations will be conducted in the parking lot at the Lonesome Pine Ski Lodge unless otherwise announced.

    Pre-race veterinary examinations will be scheduled as follows:

    To provide proof of vaccinations, the driver should be present at the examination site at least 15 minutes before the scheduled physical examination of the team.

    All entrants must attend the mushers' meeting on Friday, February 29 at 4:30 p.m. at the Fort Kent Municipal Building.

  3. Race Start

    The official start date is Saturday, March 1, 2008. The starting place will be on Main Street, Fort Kent. The starting time will be 8:00 a.m. eastern standard time. Teams shall leave the starting line at two-minute intervals.

    To allow for verification of dogs and gear by race officials, teams are required to be present at the staging area on Saturday by 6:30 a.m..

  4. Required Gear

    Drivers shall wear their identifying bibs throughout the race.

    All dogs shall be harnessed in single or double file. All harnesses shall be padded around the neck and chest areas. Reflective tape is required on harnesses.

    A flashing light must be worn by each lead dog from sunset to sunrise.

    Ganglines may be cable, cable core, or any synthetic or natural material, but chains are not allowed. If cable ganglines are used, the driver must have easily accessible cable cutters which are known to be capable of cutting the gangline.

    At least four booties per dog are required at the race start.

    Spare keys to the driver's vehicle shall be left with the Can-Am Crown Race Committee or a team handler.

    Each driver must have in possession at all times during the race:


  5. Dropped Dogs

    Drivers may drop dogs only at the designated checkpoint or at the start. See the General Rules, Section C.8 for more specifics.

    A team must leave the checkpoint with at least 5 fit dogs on the towline and traveling under their own power.

  6. Trail Procedure
    1. Checkpoint

      Each driver must personally sign in and out of the checkpoint before continuing. The checkpoint will be staffed with judges, and veterinary service will be available. Unclaimed food and equipment left at the checkpoint become the property of Can-Am Crown.

    2. Outside Assistance

      All food to be used during the race must be carried from the start of the race. Water will be provided at the checkpoint. Handlers are not allowed at the checkpoint.

    3. Withdrawal From the Race

      Drivers may withdraw from the race at the checkpoint by filling out and signing an official resignation form. Drivers are responsible for retrieving personal gear.

  7. Prize Money:

    Prize money will be awarded to the twelve teams with the best finish times.

  8. Awards Ceremony

    The awards ceremony and brunch will take place in Fort Kent on Sunday, March 2 at 8:00 a.m. at the Lonesome Pine ski lodge.
