My husband (Andy Bartleet) and I live in western Maine with our sixteen dogs. Throughout the winter we run dogsled tours that introduce people to the joys of travel by dog team: the delightful relationships among the dogs and between the dogs and people, set against an incredible backdrop of snow-filled woodlands.
The trip to the St John Valley for the Can-Am Crown has been our principal annual family event for the last eight years - as important as any holiday or birthday. We select the length of race according to which one best suits the abilities of the dogs each year.
As always, we look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones along the Can-Am trail.
Other mushing experience includes multiple expeditions of five nights or more, caring for dogs and students/clients in all the conditions New England winters are famous for!

I live in central New Hampshire and work as a scientist at an Antibody Engineering company. However, my real passion is running dogs. They are my family and best friends, and there is nowhere I would rather be than on the trail with them. This is my 16th year with sled dogs, and in the past few years my team and I have accomplished a lot. This year, with 26 dogs in the race pool, the help of a very experienced handler and a little luck, I hope to help my team to a top placing finish in this year's 250.
I've done lots of tours. Last year (2009), I ran a team in the Beargrease 400.

I'm a landscaper and heavy equipment operator. I love my dogs and have been driving dogs for 13 years now. My goal is to be able to run the Iditarod competitively. So I'm taking my time. I don't want to be one of those people who do the bare minimum on experience and races to try the Iditarod. My wife, Carolyn, and son, Nicholaus, love the dogs, and they help me as much as they can. Our kennel is made up completely of Mackey and King lines now. So, when the dogs are ready, we will tackle the Iditarod. Until then we will train and race to improve on our racing skills.
I raced countless sprint races from New York to Maine for 9 years.

I've been doing dogsledding since I was 8 years old with the family dog. But I started doing long distance races in 1994 with the Labrador 400 mile and then the Can Am 250 mile in 1995. Since then, I train my dog team every year and come to Maine. The only year I didn't come was in 2003, the year 1 realized my dream in racing the Yukon Quest, where I placed sixth. I won the Can-Am 250 four times, in 1998, 2002, 2005 and 2008. I like coming to Fort Kent to be with our great host family and to race this exceptional race with your great organization. I have five children and all have left the nest. I also have 11 grandchildren. My wife does not enjoy the cold, so dog sledding is out for her. She goes south to Sarasota for the winter, so she gets to visit with the grandkids. I ran the Can-Am last year and was trying out my new knees, so this year I plan on doing a bit better.

I have been mushing since 1991. I am more specifically interested in the Siberian husky. I feel this breed is part of the world genetic heritage that deserves to be protected. Keeping the breed alive is very important to me. Participating in races is part of this goal, since it allows me to correctly evaluate the individuals we are breeding. I am more interested in the long distance type of race. My goal is to participate in both the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod. We should be entering these races in 2011. The longest race we ever participated in is La Grande Odyssée in France, both in 2006 and in 2008 with 14 dogs. On the professional side, my husband and I own a company directly linked to my passion. We produce and distribute fresh frozen diets for dogs and cats. Training the dogs helps me to understand a lot about natural nutrition, and I feel we can produce and put better products on the market and provide better advice to our clients.

This will be Toiamai (Toy-a-my) Sled Dogs second Can Am 60, and we hope to improve on last year's awesome run. The whole team had a blast! Both my wife Ngarewa & I train our dogs on the local trails of the Upper Vally area and we are looking forward to seeing what this season brings for our team. We are based in Norwich VT with a small kennel of 24 dogs, and are currently focused on racing distances of 60-100 miles. Can Am is a well organized and challenging race that we are drawn to each year. When we are not training dogs, we both enjoy snowboarding, biking & traveling.
Our experience includes many training & racing miles on the runners over the last 6 years.

I had told them last year that we were getting ready for the CAN-AM 60, so here we are throwing our hat into the ring. This will be the second year of racing for this bunch of loveable "rejects", and I do believe that we are well prepared to take on this challenge. Since our last trip in Fort Kent, we've kept up the training throughout the summer and can't wait till the weather cools down so that we may hit some serious trails in early September. Safe to say that this new adventure in Northern Maine will again be the highlight of this upcoming season. We enjoyed ourselves wholeheartedly last year in the CAN-AM 30, but the distance was too short. Can't wait to go out there and explore new territories. And yes, if I do happen to fall on another "demoiselle" in distress, we will again stop and help her. As far as I'm concerned that's what this mushing stuff is all about -SPORTSMANSHIP AND COMRADERY. Later Folks!
I run a dog sledding business out of Baisley Lodges. The concept is that people come out with their own dog teams, and we go out there exploring over 150 miles of gorgeous backcountry. Did I pique your curiosity? If so, check things out at http://baisleylodges.blogspot.com. I plan to again blog about my "trail adventures" throughout the next training season. Hopefully, these ones won't be as adventurous as last year, but then again you never know what will happen with a bunch of dogs. Stay the course!

After hiking the Appalachian trail end to end with my German Shepherd dog and backcountry skiing in Colorado and Utah, I became interested in dogsledding. My girlfriend and I recently moved to Maine with our 16 dogs for better training opportunities.
I love to spend time with my dogs whether we are training in the forest or just doing chores in the kennel, but what is most rewarding is the bond that develops between man and dog and the trust they have in me.
In the future, I am looking foward to doing longer races.

Every year I come to Fort Kent, and it's a real pleasure to see my second family again.
Everybody comes to win this race, but each year something happens. This year I'm coming with the same dogs, but I hope I can finish with eight dogs and not run half the race with dogs in my sled bag. I have a few dogs that look good, but I don't know how they will do this winter. No pressure. I just want to do the race and enjoy the company of the Fort Kent gang.
With my wife, I care for my two sons, twenty dogs, and two horses. My wife has supported my hobby ever since I started racing (11 years ago). I don't know how I could do it without her support.
Take care, all of you! I'll see you in March, 2010!

Joseph became interested in sled dogs after hearing tales from his grandmother about her uncle who had sled dogs. He has been running dogs recreationally for twenty years, and he and his dogs have covered many miles throughout Maine and New Hampshire. He is humbled by the dogs' athleticism and drive. Joe loves being a part of the team. The kennel is comprised of 24 huskies, two of which he has had since the start - twenty years ago, and although now retired they still get excited when they see the sled and harnesses come out in early fall. This will be Joe's first official race.
"I have run recreationally for twenty years on the trails of the White Mountain National Forest. I have camped on the trail with the dogs for several consecutive nights when running long stretches of trail.

These dogs are my family, my passion heart and soul. Combined with an amazing and supportive husband, I appreciate each and every team/family member. It's not just about racing or training; it's about our commitment, dedication and loyalty to each other. I appreciate all we strive to complete and every accomplishment. Our pride is in each other and our time together, and we will always shoot for the stars!
We have been a slow rising team, with our focus and goals set at a new level in 2007. Unfortunately, after a serious injury in October 2008, training was at an all-time low. That changed the focus on racing. The goal (after being grateful and amazed to be alive) was to introduce the five yearlings to racing, being on the road, and being around others. The entire season reminded me to appreciate our time together and all we can handle!

I have a kennel of 17 dogs, mostly Golden/Border Collie mixes, but have a Siberian, lab/hound mix, 2 husky/hound mixes (just pups still), Golden, Border Collie mix, and of course we can't leave out the little mini Dachshund (she rides IN the sled though). They are hard working pups that love to please. I take great pride in the care, training, and behavior work I do with my pack and because of this I am able to take them on free reign walks - the whole pack - and do not have to tie them in the dog yard. Some of my pups will make better herders, hunters, and search and rescue dogs - which is also going to be another part of my training regiment. But all learn to pull and work as a team. I hope to increase my race distance each year and eventually build my kennel up -with my own breed of Alaskan huskies to eventually run the Iditarod - wish us luck!

I am a biologist for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Oceans Management Branch) since last winter. I'm a lucky father of three healthy kids Nymphea (7), Mateo (3) and Mavrick (1) with a wonderful woman Jacinthe. I did the Can-Am 30 mile race with huskies in 2007. This year, I will enjoy doing it with our new dogs out of Cook's bloodline.
Two years ago, we went to Cross Lake to buy some good old Cook's leaders. This year,in the 30-mile race, we will try a couple of yearlings out of them. These dogs are very powerful and fast. Our kennel is young with actually 34 dogs between two months and one year old (total 50 dogs counting retired and breeding dogs). We are looking forward to a season of great mushing. I live with my wife, Mary, in the village of Inverary, in Southeast Ontario, Canada. We're both retired, have 5 grown children and 4 grandchildren. I did not get into sled dogs and racing until 1979 at the age of 42, an age when a lot of racers are thinking about retiring from the sport.
In the 30 years of racing, I have entered over 150 races of distances ranging from 6 to 400 miles and from Michigan to Labrador. A few of the races have been Newberry 60, Craftsbury 60, Sandwich Notch 60, Marmora 30, 60 and 150, Eldorado 50, Bancroft 30 and 60, Kearney 80, Newboro 50, Trail Saver 70, Tug Hill 60, Wawa 100 and 80, and of course Fort Kent; the Can-Am 250 once in '98 (DNF as race stopped due to the trail being rained out) and the Can-Am 60 in 97, 01, 02, 03 and 2005. I am not a winning team but have loved the experience anyway.
My kennel is now down to 13 Alaskan Huskies, and I have dropped back to 25 - 30 mile races as a few of my dogs are getting older and I find the hills are getting bigger and the competition younger each year. My plan is to race a few races over the next couple of years, then the dogs and I will become a recreational team as we enjoy retirement together.

We live off-grid on 74 acres in the middle of the Can-Am race loops. We have 12 full time sled dogs and a few retirees to cheer us on. I have been mushing for 9 years, but this will be my first race. (Look out! I crash a lot.) I really enjoy the solitude of being on the trail, and I have pretty much mastered the drag behind. I also enjoy hiking, gardening, snowboarding and shoveling poo.

I operate a small guiding business along the coast doing half and full day tours. I also guide with Mornington Crescent Sled Dogs when needed, Outward Bound Expeditions as offered, work with Winter Journeys Guide Service as needed.
I have been teaching Outward Bound since the mid nineties and have had the opportunity to work in many of the mediums offered. Work and play often get intermingled while teaching rock climbing, going backpacking, or scrambling through the canyons of the west. When no one is around to play with, I tend towards the smaller streams in Maine to fly fish or swing a hammer in or on my house, with the hope of fixing or changing something.
My wife and I began our affliction with dogs after buying our home on the mid-coast of Maine and having been given our first Alaskan husky, who immediately grew accustomed to house life with our two other pets, After a short intro to skijoring recreationally, I decided it would be nice to spend time with my wife by acquiring more four legged friends, oops. That's where the ball started rolling and now the understanding is, if I bring them home, Aimee will name them. Over the past few years we have begun to provide both educational and guided services to local school groups and visitors alike and were privileged to teach the last dog sledding course Outward Bound offered in Maine. Our handler, Liz, has been a great asset from the beginning, helping to shower the gang with affection and do chores while she is home from school where she is currently pursuing a degree as a veterinarian.

Ten years ago I got a husky just because I thought he was beautiful. That beautiful dog, Moby, opened up the world of dog sledding, a sport I have always dreamed I would be a part of. I grew up on Mount Desert Island and years ago met Meg Burden, who shared my love of the husky breed. Together we built up a small kennel and trained our sled dogs with the help of our husbands, friends and families. Today, Tsali Kennel hosts a nonprofit youth dogsledding program we call Pulling Together. The life lessons we have learned through mushing -- from caring for the needs of the dogs to conditioning them in all seasons, are invaluable. Commitment, patience, extreme focus and composure when out on the trail, along with insight in times of trouble are skills the children of Pulling Together are learning. I hope my own two little boys will someday become involved in dogsledding. I want to be an example to my boys, Ryder and Cole, to follow their own dreams.
I teach youths the basics of running sleddogs, responsibility for safety of dogs and children, nutrition, care of sled dogs, working dog psychology and conditioning of the canine athlete. I accompanied and cared for 10 dogs that we flew to Fairbanks, Alaska for special training with overflow and cold, windy temperatures. I went on training runs along Murphy's Dome area with our ten dogs from Tsali Kennel and helped a 2008 Yukon Quest musher who was using our dogs for her qualifying races. I also helped with the initial harness training of most of those 10 dogs when they were pups and then yearlings.

Marla Brodsky also goes by the stage name, Marla BB. A Blues Singer for over 25 years and a Martial Artist for over 15 years, at the age of 50 Marla decided she'd give her body a break & start sled dog racing.
"I don't mean literally a break, but I thought some time out from the rigors of martial arts training. I don't know what I was thinking! Mushing is less structured, more random, & dealing with the unexpected. I guess that's why I like it so! So, I closed my Tae Kwon Do Studio & opened Hilltown Wilderness Adventures. I still teach Self Defense & Tae Kwon Do at the college level, but now my focus is on being an outdoor guide for Hiking, Biking, Kayaking, Skiing, Skijoring, & Mushing. I'd rather make a living outdoors than in. I still sing & intend to go back on the road part time, now that my daughter is starting kindergarten & my puppy team is a year old. My last tour was throughout Alaska, where I met my new mushing friends, Lance Mackey & Aliy Zirkle. I have since apprenticed / handled part time for Aliy at SP Kennel in Two Rivers & sang the National Anthem at the ceremonial start of Iditarod 2008...
"I was apprentice/handler for Aliy Zirkle at SP Kennel in Two Rivers, Alaska part time
for the past 2 years (2008-2009). I worked the Iditarod (start & finish) 2008 with Aliy & Iditarod 2007 with Bruce Linton (from Vermont). I did training runs with mid & long distance dogs from 10 miles up to 60-70 miles in Interior Alaska. I adopted one of Aliy's Iditarod finishers, who is now mother to my five (1 year old) pups rounding out a 6 dog Alaskan Husky team. I began my own dog sledding business 2 years ago in Western Massachusetts. It's called HILLTOWN WILDERNESS ADVENTURES, offering rides, mushing school, skijor clinics, assembly programs and festival demonstrations!"

We run 6 dogs that are the pets of the van Drimmelen and Maple families. We have been running for 12 years, and we run for pure fun and the sheer pleasure all experience when the dogs see the harness come out of the sled bag. I have run the Fort Kent Can-Am 30 four times and plan to return here every year that we are running. There is no better organized race, friendlier and more helpful people. We love the carnival atmosphere and through the adopt-a-musher program have made some great friends.
I work in Connecticut and return to our home in Vermont each weekend. Running dogsleds and sailing in the summer are wonderful, healthy, invigorating therapies to cope with the stresses of a professional career.
2009 was our best running season to date, rounded off by the 2009 Can-Am 30 race. It was the last planned race for one of our first dogs (Kiska), and she had to assume leader status at the last moment at the age just shy of 12. She led the team from the front, and we finished our fastest time at a Can-Am 30 race with only 5 dogs on the team. That team is on the Can-Am website 2009 Youtube Can-Am #6. We are deeply saddened by the very sudden and unforeseen loss of Kiska in July 2009 to cancer. Kiska taught many dogs how to be lead dogs and rarely missed a turn on the trail. She was an adoring single-minded Siberian Husky and shall forever be with us on the trail and in our hearts. We dedicate this run to Kiska, who ran the Can-Am 30 four times.
I have been racing since 1999, and I have finished every race I have entered. I have raced the Fort Kent Can-Am 30 four times. I also have raced the Sandwich Notch races 4 times (1999, 2002, 2003 and 2009).

We have been racing Siberian Huskies for about 11 years, taking part in dryland sprint racing in the United Kingdom and, for the last 4 years, mid distance racing in North America. This will be our fourth year in Fort Kent having taken part in the Can Am 60 in 2007 and 2009 and the Can Am 30 in 2008. We really love the event, it is the highlight of our mushing year. The race is always so well organised and we are always made feel so welcome by the people of Fort Kent. We currently have a kennel of 34 Siberian Huskies ranging in age from 12 years old down to the litter of puppies that were born in June 2009. We relocated the kennel this Fall from Shubenacadie in Nova Scotia to Saint-Jacques in New Brunswick. We moved primarily so that we could have better trails and conditions for running the dogs with the aim of having myself and the team better prepared to run longer distances in the future.

I love being with my dogs and having fun with them on the trail. I started dog mushing as a child hooking my beagle to a bike or a sled. While at the University of Vermont I met Ingrid Bower and she introduced me officially to the sport. My years as a handler/intern for her taught me a lot about the sport. Now with my own team I am learning even more. I am looking forward to competing in my First Can-am race.

I've been running dogs recreationally for about 9 years in Fort Kent. I've been involved with the Can Am one way or another since it began, usually covering/photographing the race for publications in Maine and around the country. This will be my first year filing a story from the inside and I'm really looking forward to it and experiencing the race first hand. Mushing has become more important to me over the last two years and I owe a lot to these dogs and my mushing family who have been so supportive (you know who you all are!) Running dogs is a great confidence builder and certainly keeps a person humble. My immediate goal in mushing is to make down Main Street. After that, it's all good. I work out of Fort Kent as a freelance writer/photographer and in the off season trade the dog sled for a bicycle.

I have been on a sled since before I could walk. In other words I have known no other life then life with sled dogs! AND I LOVE IT! When my family first started mushing I would ride in a baby back pack on my moms back while she trained the "B" team, and dad trained the "A." team. We spent many starry nights training on trail, so I guess I fell in love with the dogs, the trail and the winter long before I could choose. From the time I could stand I have been running dogs! I like to go fast!!! Last season I won the 2009 3 dog Jr World Championship race in Laconia NH. I followed this up with my first 15 mile race in the Fun Run at Bear Notch road in NH! In December of 2009 I traveled to Montana to race in the Yellowstone National Forest and won both days! Yippy! I then raced in the first ever MA race MYOPIA on the North shore of MA and won! What a rush! I decided to move up to 6 dogs and have been training since for 30 mile races. My first 30 mile was suppose to be the Sandwhich Notch but like a lot of places this year it was canceled due to lack of snow. Bummer. So I am real glad about getting into the Fort Kent Can Am Crown. I will be racing against my mom but as mom always says our kennel is a team and I guess that means we'll be racing together. So I reminded her I like to go fast. She says, "go for it"! I love this sport and what better way to share my love of the sport then to let my dogs shine on.
Our family owns an outfitting company. I not only have a. full understanding of dog mushing but am experienced in teaching the art of the sport through lessons to newbies! We sell harnesses, sleds, lines, plastics and offer lessons, tours and public speaking. I am involved in all levels of this sport. I enjoy both dry land and snow sledding. I am very passionate about the sport of dog mushing and take every opportunity to spend time teaching people about the importance of proper-equipment, training and safety. I am musher, handler, speaker, teacher and a care giver for our dogs and love every minute of it! mushing is not a part of my life but a way of life for me.
