" Married for 17 years to Angel (a former successful racer herself). We have three children, Derek (17), Ryan (14), and Fredericka (9). We operate Nahmakanta Lake Camp, a wilderness camp near Baxter Park. We've had sled dogs for almost 26 years. Taking care of our kids, dogs and business doesn't leave much spare time, but my two sons and I like to take a few weeks off in late summer for a canoe trip in Northern Canada. My son and daughter also have a passion for the dogs, and they enjoy helping out in the kennel and running the dogs."

Don has won the Can-Am 250 three times, placed second in the UP200 twice, and won the Labrador 400 in 1996. He has done lots of wilderness mushing in Canada and Alaska, and he has 20 years of experience as a dogsled tour operator.

I have been running dogs for a few years now and have moved from sprints to longer distance runs. After experiencing the amazing trails in the 60 last year, I just bad to see what the 250 is a11 about. I have done 300 and 210 mile runs and loved every minute of them, even when they were most challenging. A few 1000 mile runs are my goals for the dogs and I can't imagine a better way to spend time with my best friends.

I have been running mid-distance for the last 3 seasons. I ran a 300 mile training run last January in Seeney, Michigan and did a 210 mile run from Cochrane, Ontario to Moosonee, Ontario after running the 60 in Fort Kent.

I live in Canaan, NH with 40 alaskan huskies. I've been mushing since 1994 when I only had 3 pet dogs who only went forward if I walked in front of them. Now I have a time just staying on the sled! I love mushing because of the teamwork and bond that develops between me and my dogs. This year we are lucky to have a wonderful handler, Sandi, to help us train.

I started sprint racing in 1996 and have slowly changed over to mid-distance racing. Occasionally I will also give rides to brave folks who dare to get on a dogsled with me. :-)

    • Can-Am Crown 60; 14 place 2005
I am 43 years old and I have been running a Siberian team since 1990. What I like most about mushing is to forget about everything once I am on the runners… at that moment, I am no longer president of a company. I no longer have bills to pay. I can relax and enjoy the present moment along with my dog friends. After running twice in La Grande Odysee in France (2006 and 2008), my goals are now to race the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod in 2011. Until then, I will put my energy into training my team and make them live the type of experience they will need to race up there. I also plan to race the Hudson Bay Quest at the end of March 2009. Thanks to my husband Thomas, and all my dogs that work with me to live these beautiful moments.

My partner John and I live a sled dog lifestyle in the Moosehead Lake region of Maine with our 32 awesome Alaskan Huskies. I love training our dogs and seeing how happy they are just to be out on the trail! Having fun is number one and doing the best that we can to be competitive is icing on the cake! For John and me it has always been about the dogs, they are the first priority in our lives, so there really isn't time for much else, but it works for us and them!

I've been running sled dogs since 1986, racing in New England, Ontario and Labrador. We train dogs 8 months out of the year every year all over the Moosehead Lake region.

Bob O'Hearn lives with his wife, Rhonda, in Sandown, New Hampshire. They moved from Massachusetts in 1999 in search of recreational trails, wooded land, and a dog friendly area to plant their roots.

The O'Hearn team now consists of 20+ Siberian Huskies (aka canine kids) which totally consume their lives and leave little discretionary time or money for other interests. The ages of the dogs on Bob's team range from 2 to 9 years.

Bob, still employed as an automotive technician, is especially grateful for an understanding employer and neighbors. He brings to this event past experiences, such as earning the Sportsmanship Award at the 2004 Beargrease 150 and placing first in the Crafstbury 60 back in 2005. He has run both the Can-Am 30 and the Can-Am 60 numerous times, and last season he took the Red Lantern in the Can-Am 250. In addition, Bob enjoys long taining runs and sharing the trails and overall mushing experience with friends. This year, the goal is to cash in on such experience and come away with a 'personal best' finishing time and 12 happy dogs!

Bob thanks all the volunteers and sponsors and the veterinarian team for making this race possible.

I have many new dogs and hope to have a real team in 3 years, but feel I'm ready to take on whatever the Can-Am has to throw at me. My goal is to be the oldest musher ever to win the race. Bring on the snow and the hills!

Hi, my name's Christian. I used to work as a miner. My hobby has been sled dogs for 22 years. Last year my wife and I went to France for La Grande Odyssee, the biggest European race, with fourteen dogs. I did not win the race, but they gave me the prize for being the nicest musher. I was 12th among 25 participants. That's a nice score. It was my first international race ever. I did a race of 120 miles in Saint Pamphi1e and many others that I don't have enough time and place to tell you about. 1 love long distance races because it's a very long time alone with only myself; the dogs and nature. I can't really explain it, I just love it. My biggest dream is to go participate in the Yukon Quest or the lditarod. Well, I think that's all, thanks for listening to me. See you at the race, my dogs are waiting for me.

We have a dog sled company. We give rides to other people on a few private trails. We do short or long distance, from one to a few days. I had another experience. It's not really a race -- more of a wager with the town folks. It was a 202 km trek in two days from Chapais to Mine Troilus. I did this one for the sake of the Marie-Soleil Tougas Foundation. I did yet another wager with a few friends. It's not a race either, but it was a 230 km trek from Chibougamau to La Dore. (North of Quebec)

We will keep trying, because we have so much fun in the Fort Kent community during this race weekend. After surviving record breaking snow amounts last winter here in Northern Maine, we are hoping to do a little less shoveling and a lot more training.

We have competed and volunteered in sprint races for many years. We also have been involved with many educational and recreational programs for Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire Girls, Pet Quarters, and various public and private school settings. We try to promote the world of dog sports in every way.

I have been racing Siberians in sprint and mid-distance racing since 1999 and 2005 respectively. We moved across to Canada from Great Britain in 2005 with our 9 Siberian Huskies and loved the country and lifestyle so much that we now have 29 dogs and plan to remain in North America.

This will be the third year entered in the Can Am; I ran the 60 in 2007 and the 30 in 2008. Following on from finishing the Eagle Lake 100 in 2008, we are hoping to do a few more 'longer' mid distance races this winter with the aim of improving on last year. Up until Dec 2008 I was an aircraft engineer in the UK Royal Navy but decided to retire so as to better pursue our mushing hobby/addiction.

I did dryland sprint racing in the UK 1999-2005.

I now have enough experience to run any race or distance with my dogs. Over the years I've also taught my friends and others how to run dogs. My wife Carolyn and I have a 2 year old son Nicholas. Some day he may also love mushing. I grew up in Jersey and am still here, but we are moving to Alaska in two years when Carolyn finishes her nursing school. Outlaw Ridge is home to 21 Siberians. We have adopted a life style much as a wolf pack and share the same discipline, loyalty and respect. I do not kennel, crate or separate the dogs and feel that this bond is valuable both on and off the trail.

We also actively participate in educational programs. We educate the public on the sport, the time, energy and dedication it takes, and the amazing bond we share with the dogs.

While racing is an exciting part of our life, it is the dogs that are the true passion. Our goal is simply to do the best we can, enjoy our time together and finish as a happy, healthy and strong team.

The Can-Am is the highlight of our season. Not only is the race an amazing event, but the surrounding community, volunteers and spectators offer an incredible atmosphere and an awesome place to be.

I have been running for 12 years. Began in local sprint races in CT, RI and MA. In 2005 I began running 15 milers and have since changed the team's focus and the distance we choose to race.

Bill and I have 21 Siberians that we have mostly raised as pups. We are one of the few handful of mushers in the state of Connecticut and I am the only born and raised female distance musher in the state. Bill fishes all summer for blues, and I compete in agility trials with two of my Siberians. I look forward to the Can-Am each year as it is the best race in all of New England. This will be my 5th year racing, but my 4th year racing an all Siberian team.

I'm hoping to move up to longer races as I increase the size of our kennel. Shooting to run Can-Am 250 in 2010. Last year I was only the second US citizen in the top 14 of the Can-Am 60 and the fastest Siberian team in the race.

Rhonda was born and raised in Massachusetts. She and her husband Bob moved to Sandown, NH in 1999 in search of recreational trails, wooded land and a dog-friendly area to plant their roots. Some of Rhonda's favorite and most treasured mushing memories revolve around the now defunct non-motorized playgrounds of Mattawin and Phillips Brook.

Rhonda is VP of the North Country Mushers, a non-profit NH based organization, partnering with snowmobile clubs to encourage the growth and understanding of the sport of dog mushing in Northern New England by promoting and sanctioning races, organizing social and fund-raising events and ensuring the safe and ethical treatment of all participants.

Prior to March 2008, she and husband Bob collectively have come to the Main Street Starting Line eight times. To Rhonda, the dogs of Team Mishawum are not commodities; they are an extension of the family. This deep-rooted emotional connection bared its soul last season, right here in beautiful Fort Kent when their team successfully completed the CAC250.

When not exercising dogs, Rhonda is kept very busy with her new job as a Financial Initiatives Coordinator, cross training at the gym, and taking in the occasional road race.

"I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I attempted to educate myself at the University of Iowa but graduated with a degree in violin performance instead.

In 1994 I set out to walk the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. I had heel blisters for the first 300 miles. In Tennessee I met John Mahoney, and we walked the rest of the way to Mount Katahdin together. During this 2000+ mile hike we had the brilliant idea that going such a long distance would be easier if we had a dog team to carry the gear.

We have had sled dogs since 1996. The Can-Am Crown Race is the first race we ever entered. My husband raced in 1998, and of all the races we have been to since then we think of the Can-Am as the best.

In 2004 my husband and I went on a 6-week winter camping expedition in the Wyoming and Wind River Mountain ranges using our dog team and a 14-foot Tanana River freight sled. We crossed the Continental Divide and reached altitudes of 11,000 feet. He stood on one runner, and I stood on the other, for 462 miles."

I grew up on Mount Desert Island, with Acadia National Park as a backyard. My three sisters and I spent most of our time outside building forts, blazing trails and getting dirty. That passion for nature carried on as I am now a gardener/landscaper. Not having much work available here in the winter months, a friend got me involved with a non-profit kennel, Tsali Training Kennel, here on the island. The owner, Meg Burden, taught me how to understand the working dog and the sport of dog sledding. I have since fallen in love with the dogs' great personalities, the depth of the pack mentality, and the joy you see in the dogs as they work. We have been fortunate to have permission to run our team on various Park trails and to train in a beautiful area. When I am not working, I am usually walking my dog and two goats through my back woods trails.

I worked at Tsali Training Kennel as a handler/trainer for Meg Burden during the last training season. I am also on staff at Tsali Training Kennel, assisting the young people involved in the Pulling Together Youth Dog Sledding Program when they hook up for their runs and do their training.

My wife and I run our 5 dogs and run them with their siblings owned by Rhonda Maple. We run purely for fun and for the sheer pleasure the dogs have when seeing the harness come out of the sled bag. I have run the Can-Am 30 three times, the last being in 2008, and I've run the Sandwich Notch three times in the last 10 years. We love the Can Am race as everybody makes it into a real carnival event, and the adopt a musher program is such a great way to meet new people and make friends. I work in Connecticut and commute back to Vermont every weekend. Running sleds in the winter and sailing in the summer is the best therapy one can find from the rigors of a professional career. Whenever we run races we dedicate the run to our first husky, Alex, who took us down a road we never imagined and to Alex's love of his life, Sooty, a Rhonda Maple husky.

I raced at North Stratford NH in 2008 -- two 30 mile races on the same weekend. I also raced at Sandwich Notch in 1999, 2002, and 2003. I have finished every race I've entered.

I retired from the Canadian Armed Forces 12 years ago and had a hard time adjusting to "Civy Street".

Someone gave me a dog so that I would have company during my daily walks in the woods. Found an old "rikity" sled, hooked the dog up and went exploring. There I was, addicted to "Mushing". Adopted a whole bunch of rejects from the dog sledding racing circuit and never looked back. The "Mob" and I have no expectations of winning this event as just like my dogs, I don't care if we come in first or last. All we want to do is go out there and explore new territories. Now if we can only get out of the "Starting Chute"!

I also own and operate a cottage rental business in northern New Brunswick, called Baisley Lodges. In the winter, I groom and maintain over 100 miles of dog sledding trails. I offer mushing "packages" where folks and their own dog teams come and use my trail circuits. As the terrain resembles a lot what is seen in Fort Kent, many Quebec teams use and practice on my trails. An interesting fact is that three of the top ten finishers in the CAN-AM 30 (2008) trained in this area.

I was born in Bucharest, Romania and have always been surrounded by dogs. In Romanian cities, it is a common sight to see packs of stray dogs roaming around. Sooner or later you end up feeding the ones around your house and they become yours. I remember being escorted to school and back home by packs of dogs, and always being interested in what holds them together as a group. I came to Maine in 2002 to study. Now I live on Mount Desert Island with my wonderful partner, Jen, and our 2 dogs (not strays), neither of whom are sled dogs. I was first introduced to dog sledding by Meg Burden of the Pulling Together Youth Dog Sledding Program. Now I work with Meg as a handler for the training kennel, and I am forever grateful to her for showing me this wonderful world of working dogs. I believe this is the beginning of a life-long relationship with this tremendous sport. I am looking forward to running my first 30-mile race in this great state of Maine. Thanks to Meg for all that she has given me and to the dogs for their unwavering loyalty.

I have been interested in dogs for many years, but until a few years back was I unable to afford them. Roy Smith, of Adirondack Racing kennel, gave me my first dogs to get me started. I have been hooked ever since. I have been running recreationally for the last couple of years, and now I've decided to start training to run some races. I co-own a kennel with my wife, Michelle. We own 22 dogs, including 19 Alaskans, 2 Siberians and 1 hound.

My husband (Hank DeBruin) and I started our life with huskies 15 years ago, and completely went to the dogs 10 years ago when we moved to the snowy Haliburton Highlands, a beautiful rugged wilderness area in north central Ontario, where we started a touring kennel. We now have 140 purebred Siberian Huskies in our kennel. Along with our fabulous staff, we introduce hundreds of guests to the amazing world of dogsledding every winter. We have 4 children, Logan 8, Dustyn 6, Michaela 2 and baby Jessica. The three oldest all run and race dogs as well. The Can-Am 30 will be my first dogsled race. I will be running some of Hank's older race leaders that are a bit too slow for the marathon races but awesome and dependable dogs! I will also have a few "pups" (yearlings) on the team that are prospects for next year's distance team. To learn more about our dogs and us, visit http://www.winterdance.com.

While we have run a touring kennel with 140 dogs for 9 years, I have never entered a dogsled race. My husband has done all the racing up until now. I do of course have experience running dogs in touring situations. The dogs I will be running have far more experience in races than I do!!

I am once again looking forward to this event. I hope to be able to participate and complete the 30-mile race. But, whatever happens, I will always enjoy this sport in every aspect of it no matter what position I end up with, even if it is just being the handler!

I am a molecular biologist and run a cancer research laboratory at the Universite de Sherbrooke. I am married and the proud father of a one year old boy. I got infected with the mushing virus some six years ago and recently switched breeds to Alaskan huskies. I really enjoy being with my dogs as well as the lifestyle. This will be my first year racing and my goal for this year's CAC is simply to have fun and finish with a happy healthy team!

My experience includes just plain old recreational sledding and a few winter camping outings with the gang.

"This is the first year that I have been involved with sled dog racing, but I am no stranger to the Northern Maine woods. I am a registered master Maine guide in the areas of hunting, fishing and recreation. I am also the regional recreational safety coordinator for Northern Aroostook County working for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. I enjoy teaching all aspects of outdoor recreation as well. I am active in coordinating and instructing the Maine Guide Course, hunter education, bow hunting, trapping, ATV and snowmobile safety.

I've been enjoying and training these dogs since late last winter, but the best test will be the 30 miles of this race.

My goals for this race are surviving, learning from my experience and having fun with the dogs while they are doing what they love to do. This is what we've worked together for. We also enjoy the Fort Kent community and all the support this race attracts."

Although Kevin hasn't raced before, he has given personal recreational rides and participated in commnity education about dog sledding and sled dogs. He has also assisted with training of teams.
