SECURITY
Security committee volunteers are the extra eyes and ears of
local law enforcement.
Volunteers are responsible for
communicating with local law enforcement and cooperating to help
the race start and run smoothly.
The limits of what can and can't
be done by the security committee are ultimately decided by the
local police chief.
- Keep unauthorized persons outside the barriers.
- Keep the general public off the race staging area while
mushers are getting ready. Watch points of access to the area.
Can-am volunteers will be wearing name badges. Use your
discretion about others. Don’t be overly strict, but don’t let things
get out of hand, either.
- Be on the lookout for potentially dangerous situations or
actions that may cause problems, like throwing things at dogs or
mushers.
- Ensure that no pets or stray dogs are near the starting area
while sled dogs are present. This is important! A pet cat or dog
(even if held or on a leash) can distract a team, or worse, be
attacked by the sled dogs.
